Dr. Shauna Woody grew up in the beautiful mountains of West Virginia and transitioned to the east coast to pursue her bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Massachusetts. Upon graduating she began research at the Department of Molecular Microbiology for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at Tufts University in Boston. It was at this time Dr. Woody decided to pursue her master’s degree in Medical Sciences at Boston University.
Dr. Woody’s foundational education of Microbiology and interest in oral health led her to study the prevention of dental decay in college. She began working as a dental assistant at a practice that catered to patients with dental phobias. As her oral health education evolved, Dr. Woody became committed to preventing and working with dental phobias, which typically start during childhood.
Dr. Woody earned her Doctorate of Dental Surgery at the University of California-San Francisco School of Dentistry. She went on to train as a pediatric dentist in Philadelphia at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children and earned a certificate in Pediatric Dental Medicine. She is also a diplomat of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
Dr. Woody completed her residency in San Diego and recently moved to the Triangle with her husband who accepted an Academic position at Duke. Dr. Woody and her family love traveling, trying out new recipes and restaurants, and exploring nature with hiking and snowboarding. Outside of dentistry, Dr. Woody is extremely passionate about education for all, helping the homeless, and prevention of animal cruelty.
