Growing up in Florence, South Carolina, Dr. Sharon Lau moved north to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology. While at Chapel Hill, she was an active member of Delta Delta Digma, the pre-dental honors society and served as President during her last year. She fell in love with UNC and happily spent another 4 years at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry where she earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree.
Growing up, Dr. Lau enjoyed puzzles, painting, playing piano, and exploring the outdoors. Her inherent interest in the natural world and ability to solve problems drew her towards the field of dentistry. After spending time at the dental office where she was a patient, she learned that dentistry was a true combination of art and science.
Dr. Lau is passionate about helping to serve her community and those in need through the field of dentistry. While in dental school, she helped run SHAC, the school’s student-run free dental clinic serving those in need after school hours, as well as the Wakebrook Clinic that provided complimentary medical care to those in need at the Wakebrook facility in Raleigh. Dr. Lau also played a role in the development of the UNC Mexico Project, in which a group of students provided pediatric dental care at an orphanage in Miacatlan, Mexico.
Within dentistry, Dr. Lau is passionate about providing quality patient care by listening to her patients and presenting them with all potential treatment options. She feels that the best treatment, when possible, is always prevention so she believes in educating her patients on how to prevent serious problems from developing. She is experienced in various aspects of general dentistry including extractions, restorative treatment, and endodontics; she is also Invisalign certified.
Outside of work, Dr. Lau can be found exploring new restaurants, hiking trails, traveling, and having Netflix marathons with her husband. Together, they have two cats, Abigail and Simon, and a border collie, Ruby. She is an avid equestrian and spends much of her spare time with her thoroughbred mare, Scarlett, along with teaching horseback lessons and training horses. Dr. Lau is also passionate about her church and cheering on the Tar Heels whenever she can!
