Many people think that root canals are something to fear, but that’s a common misconception. At Riccobene Associates Family Dentistry, we perform gentle root canal therapy that relieves discomfort and pain caused by severe tooth infection. With technological advancements in the field of dentistry, root canal therapy is more comfortable and stress-free than ever before! We understand that you might have some questions concerning your upcoming root canal and want to put your mind at ease.
When Is a Root Canal Necessary?
When a tooth is severely damaged or infected, root canal treatment can alleviate the pain by removing the pulp inside the tooth. Common signs that indicate a possible need for a root canal are:
- Appearance of an abscess on gums
- Sharp tooth pain from chewing or biting down
- Swollen, tender gums.
- Throbbing, persistent tooth pain
- Tooth discoloration
What is the process of getting a root canal?
If you’re wondering what happens in a root canal procedure, don’t worry. You’re not alone. Trust us when we say that it doesn’t have to be scary! When a tooth becomes severely infected, a root canal is necessary to relieve pain and get you well on your way back to a healthy mouth. Before your root canal begins, we’ll clean and numb the area so your experience will be sterile and pain-free. If needed, we can also administer one of our relaxing sedation options. The sedation won’t put you to sleep, but it will eliminate any dental anxiety or fear you may be feeling. Once you’re prepped for the procedure, the rest is up to us! We’ll drill a small hole in your tooth to access the damaged pulp. Then, we’ll gently remove the pulp through the hole and thoroughly clean the inside of your tooth. Once clean, we will seal the tooth to protect it from bacteria. When your procedure is complete, we may place a dental crown over your tooth for additional protection. This process can last anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour, and once it’s over, you can look forward to instantaneous relief!
What aftercare instructions should I follow?l
For a couple of days after your root canal, your tooth may be a little sensitive. This temporary discomfort can be easily managed with over-the-counter pain medications. We recommend that you follow a soft food diet and avoid any food or liquid that is extremely hot or cold. After your treatment, you can continue your oral health routine as usual, but be gentle as the area may be sensitive.
What symptoms can I expect after my root canal?
You may experience some tenderness, swelling, or even a bad taste or smell in your mouth. However, these symptoms are temporary and should only last a few days. Call us right away if you experience any of these symptoms a week after your procedure.
